| Company background
Smart
Communication was born in Helsinki,
Finland, in the summer of 1993. The company was
started by Martti Korpijaakko, a copywriter and
campaign planner of advertising, marketing and
business-oriented communications.
Relying on his background as a journalist and
information officer, Martti began his career in
advertising in 1985. He worked for some
prestigious and highly-successful agencies, such
as USP Helsinki, USP Worldnet and
Lintas:Business. Due to his excellent language
capabilities and fluency in four languages (Fin,
Swe, Eng and Ger) it was a natural process for
more and more international accounts and
intercultural projects to be trusted to his
creative team. In 1993, in the midst of the worst
post-war recession in Western Europe, Martti took
the plunge and went independent.
Martti was happy to grab all assignments that
were available and suited the general orientation
of Smart Communication. He already had a solid
experience in most of the platforms used in
modern business communication: from brochure
production to ad campaigns and from corporate
videos to articles and press releases. The number
of accounts quickly increased covering his most
beloved areas: the travel industry,
high-technology, various consulting services,
politics on a national level - and corporate
image creation in general.
From the very beginning, the realization that the
traditional ad agency had reached the evening
slope of its life cycle and that something new
called 'network-ing' was a well-proven and more
fit idea has been one of the cornerstones of
Smart Communication's operations. The traditional
ad agency is a very expensive alternative by any
comparison, because it can match neither the
intellectual nor the cost-efficiency of an ad
hoc team of established professionals.
The idea of Smart Communication is to take on
demanding turnkey jobs by calling in the best art
directors, designers, film makers, multimedia
programmers etc. Every project is a combination
of true pro's who know each other well and who
have chosen to join forces with each other on the
very project that is their assignment. Martti
acts as the producer supervisor and/or creative
director and copywriter. In a way, you might say
that what Smart Communication essentially does,
is bring together first-class creators and sell
their services more competitively and with better
value for the clients' money than most of the big
agencies you find around.
Now Martti successfully runs his agency from the corner of Hietalahdenkatu and Kalevankatu in downtown Helsinki, very close to Hotel SAS Radisson Seaside (street address: Kalevankatu 50 A 14, 00180 Helsinki). He has never really
believed in collecting awards that ad colleagues
love to grant to each other; however, he has
picked up his fair share of such prestigious
awards as CLIO, Communication Arts and
Creativity. In addition, he acted as chairman of
the jury in the b-to-b category of Finland's
major advertising competition, the Tops of the
Year, in 1990. Martti is a graduate of the
University of Helsinki, where he majored in
International Relations and minored in Economics
and Political History.
Nothing would make Martti more happy than if you
would drop him a line over the e-mail
(martti@smartcommunication.com). Or, of course,
you can call him directly on +358-400-554157.
Since Martti believes in direct access and very
horizontal organizations, he'll most likely be
there to answer the call himself.
Smart Communication...just how much smarter can
you buy efficient marketing communication?
